Why Is My Website Not Showing Up on Google? 10 Common Reasons for Irish Businesses

Published Last updated

You've paid for a website, it's live, and you've told everyone about it. But when you search for what you do, it's nowhere to be seen. It's one of the most common things Irish business owners ask us about, and the good news is the reason is usually something fixable.

Here are the ten reasons we see most often, how to check each one, and what to do about it.

First, check whether Google knows your site exists

Go to Google and type site:yourwebsite.ie, using your own address. If nothing comes up, Google hasn't added your site to its index yet, and none of the other fixes will matter until it does. If pages do come up, Google knows about you and the problem is more about how well you rank.

1. Your website is very new

A brand new site can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to appear. You can speed things up by adding the site to Google Search Console and submitting your sitemap, which tells Google exactly which pages you have.

2. Your website is telling Google to stay away

This one catches out a lot of people, especially after a rebuild. A setting called noindex, or a line in a file called robots.txt, can tell Google not to show your pages at all. Developers often switch this on while a site is being built and forget to switch it off. A website audit will spot it straight away.

3. Google Search Console was never set up

Search Console is Google's free tool for website owners. It shows you which pages Google has found, which searches you appear for and any problems it has spotted. If nobody set it up for your site, you're working blind.

5. Your page titles and descriptions are vague

The page title is one of the strongest hints you give Google about what a page is about. If your homepage title just says "Home" or only your business name, Google has very little to go on. Each page should have its own title that says what you do and where, such as "Plumber in Galway | Murphy Plumbing".

6. There isn't enough on the page

A single page with a phone number and a few lines of text gives Google almost nothing to work with. Sites that rank well usually have a separate page for each main service, with a few hundred words of genuinely useful detail, photos of real work and answers to the questions customers ask. Our guide to what makes a good tradesman website goes through this in more detail.

7. You never mention where you work

If your website doesn't say which towns and counties you cover, Google can't match you to local searches. Mention your areas naturally in your page titles, headings and text, and consider a page for each main area you serve. Our SEO guide for plumbers shows how this works for a local trade.

8. Your website is slow or hard to use on a phone

Most people looking for a tradesperson are on their phone. If your site takes ages to load, has tiny text or buttons that are hard to tap, Google takes that into account, and so do customers, who'll simply hit back and ring someone else.

9. Your Google Business Profile is missing or doesn't match

For local searches, the map results often come before the websites. If you don't have a Google Business Profile, or the name, phone number and address on it don't match your website, you're missing out on some of the most valuable spots on the page.

What to do next

You don't need to work through all of this by hand. Our free website audit checks most of these things in a few minutes, including whether Google can see your pages, your titles and descriptions, your speed on mobile and your security basics. You'll see every score and fix on screen straight away, and you can unlock the full emailed report for €0.99 if you want it.

Nobody can honestly promise you the top spot on Google. But fixing the basics gives your website a fair chance, and for most small businesses that's where the biggest gains are.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for a new website to show up on Google?

Usually somewhere between a few days and a few weeks. Submitting your sitemap through Google Search Console can help it get picked up sooner.

Why does my website show up for my business name but not my services?

Google knows your site exists, but it doesn't have enough reason to rank you for those services yet. Clearer page titles, separate service pages, mentions of your areas and a strong Google Business Profile all help.

Do I need to pay for Google Ads to appear on Google?

No. Ads put you at the top straight away for as long as you pay, but the normal results below them are free. A well set up website can earn its place there over time.

Can I check my website myself?

Yes. The site: search above is a good start, and our free website audit gives you a full list of what to fix, in plain English.
